I think so much of fanart focuses a lot on getting the character forms right and what story-telling *does* happen happens in panel form. Of course, coming form a comics/animation medium definitely skews fangirls' (and boys') perception of what a finished product is-- and there's nothing wrong with wanting to get the character forms right, or tell a story in a traditional graphic-novel framework (those are the foundation blocks, after all).
